Volta Redonda is known as the “Steel City”. It’s one of the most important centers of Brazilian manufacturing and is home to the largest steel plant in Latin America.
It was selected for industrial development for its proximity to the large cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as well as easy access to natural resources. The city is nestled in the center of a horseshoe-shaped bend the Paraiba do Sul River, giving the city its name. Volta Redonda literally means “rounded turn” in Portuguese. Despite its industrial heritage, the city abounds with trees filled with colorful wild birds and the surrounding land contains many quaint farms. Volta Redonda is a great place to visit because it’s a large city with a small town feel and a diverse history.
