Florianopolis spreads across a large island, a continental area, and several smaller islands. Its 42 beaches make Florianopolis a center of tourism and a major surfing hotspot.
Due to its location, it served as a major strategic point for seaborne commerce during European colonization and much of that history is preserved in protected historical sites. Laws against heavy industry keep pollution in Florianopolis and the abundance of universities make the population one of the most educated in Brazil. As its economy is highly dependent on tourism, Florianopolis is friendly for visitors in every way.
